THE WORK OF THE MOVEMENT IN BRAZIL

The 12 years that Dun Gorg spent working in the slums and impoverished areas of Brazil spurred him on to launching the ‘Missionary Movement – Jesus in thy neighbour’. With this in mind, it would only be natural that this NGO’s initial philanthropic efforts were based over there. To date, Il-Moviment has over 18,000 children under its case in Brazil alone, spread over various states within the country.

Hoje temos 102 casas no Brasil.

General Duties
Sheltering of street and orphan children in urban and rural areas.
Construction of Kindergartens that provide especially for young children. This is especially important when a mother is unmarried, enabling her to go to work.
The provision of food programs in various locations where poverty is rife.
The setting up of health centres for child victims of HIV/AIDS. In such cases, specialised homes are warranted and provided for.
The construction of health centres catering specifically for severely undernourished children coming from homes where poverty and misery swamp the good intent of their parents and/or carers. Il-Moviment gives priority to these cases, and has even committed itself to the situation through the construction of institutes for this purpose. Very often, such children remain within the care of il-Moviment during convalescence and recovery for more than two years, after which they are returned safely and healthy to their respective families.
To provide children within our care with the necessary educational and social muscle to improve on their present living standards and to enable them to participate in the sustained development of their homes.

General Objectives

  • To maximise on the chance of these children staving off vices and straying into the world of crime.

  • To profess and show utmost respect to all and to instil a sense of discipline and dignity.

  • To educate these children within the context of a multi-faceted approach, including the scholarship programme

  • To love these children, defend their rights and maintain their dignity, so assisting society to respect them.

  • To show tenderness to each child, embracing the fact that each represents Jesus Christ made flesh.

  • To provide psycho-social services to traumatised persons, HIV/AIDS-infected and physically-challenged children

  • To empower qualified and motivated individuals to become self-reliant by providing initial capital for self-employment. This is the basis to formation of Income-generating projects.

In Brazil, the Movement is involved in a wide spectrum of projects, including creches, nutrition programs, day-by-day studies, and formation centres for adolescents, amongst others. The following are some of the major projects that require major assistance:

Casa do Sonho da Crianca da Divina Misericordia
In the city of Sao Luis, within the state of Maranhao. Here Il-Moviment receives children infected with HIV/AIDS to whom is offered all that is required. More than 400 cases from all the state of Maranhao are welcomed through its doors yearly and remain their as residents receiving food and medicines until they are well enough to go on their way. Each of the children would usually be accompanied by one parent. This house also receives children on a transient basis, normally for a period of a month or less.

Creche Menino Jesus Amparado, Axixa, Tocantins:
According to the Famine Map of Brazil, this city is the second listed. In this home we welcome over 150 children every day. There are children who eat and study. It is a witness of extreme poverty. We need to build a home for the sisters so as to be able to live in this city and take care of three homes for poor children. Amongst them is the home of PIQUIZEIRO, which is currently being built. It is esteemed that the school of Piquizeiro will cost R$ 21.358,11.

Esta casa acolhe todos os dias mais de 200 crianças de um dia ate dez anos vindo de famílias muitos pobres. A cidade de Axixá no estado de Tocantins é a segunda cidade mais pobre na mapa da fome do Brasil.

S.O.S. Vida Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Bahia:
In this home we host malnourished children from the state of Bahia. These children were either abandoned on the streets or coming form extremely poor families. We save these children's live mainly by giving them a very expensive, but special milk called 'Fariel'. Unfortunately, the Prefatory doesn't help this home. We have many costly expenses, especially the salaries. However, in three years, 'only' 12 of the over one thousand cases received, have died.

But as for me
I will continue growing
This story must now be told
to the young and the old
in Kenya and beyond
I am a street child
born of a street mother
and unknown street father
all long disappeared
to the world only know
to the creator of us all.

I am not alone
on these scaring jungles
of different sizes
in our city in the sun
or is it in sin
where many starving young boys
and girls
have learnt to survive
while those not lucky
have all perished
thanks to the
non friendly environment
which has guaranteed
that I will never grow
like other children
who know the comfort
of a warm bed
nice food, warm clothes
and nice schools.

Prematurely old
as I sleep out in the cold nights
where cold winds bite me so...
where polythene sheets
dilapidated cartons,
discarted smelly old tyres and
stinking Nairobi River bank
provide my shelter needs.

And yet. . . despite this ugliness
around me
I see beautiful buildings
with very beautiful things
all beyond my reach,
I see beautiful people
like you
who dream beautiful dreams...
of a beutiful future...
all beyound my reach of course,
making me to occasionally
shed a tear or two
wondering, crying,
questioning and confused
yes... thinking of even taking my life,
as I demand to know
why God created me.
