THE WORK OF THE MOVEMENT IN AFRICA

The vast majority of the population in certain parts of the African continent is facing a number of problems, including the lack of basic necessities. The infections diseases and high rates of infant and maternal mortality that cast such a shadow over the future of Africa will never prevented or treated successfully as long as the continent lack a basic corps of nurses, doctors, pharmacists and other health-care workers.

KENYA

The area around the villages of Kositei and Bulbula is one of the most affected by drought in Kenya. The onset of rain, brings more damage than good, since torrential waters from the surrounding mountains, crash down and flood anything in their path.
The drought is so severe that even the hardiest of animals such as camels die, let alone sick and weak children. The river crossing these villages carries just a name but no water. Thanks to our benefactors, GFP succeeded in installing two bore holes in the area of the Patok tribe. Other small villages in the vicinity also benefit from these bore holes.
The lack of proper roads leading to these remote villages, made the project even more strenuous and expensive. Reconstruction of such roads doubled the expenses. Despite all this, we succeeded, and nowadays children flock to the bore holes with tanks and all sorts of containers to take water back home, whereas before, they had to dig deep holes in the dry river- bed in search of muddy water. Thanks to all this, a Feeding Program managed by the Movement has been introduced, from which around 100 chidren benefit.

These two images show how water was collected before our project was implemented.

In Kenya, 95% of the project for the construction of “The Divine Mercy Home” in the village of Sero has been completed. This is a Home for newborn and children up to 10 years, who are either orphans or afflicted with AIDS. Works started on 4th December 2006; and although still in the construction phase, the Home already hosts 130 children. Two dormitories, a hospital called ”M’Intix wahdek” (You are not alone), the dining Halls and kitchen, a Convent for the Nuns and a Chapel dedicated to the Divine Mercy, are already functioning. These blocks were inaugurated with the blessing of Bishop Philip Anyolo of Homa Bay together with the Founder of the missionary movement ‘Gesu’ fil-Proxxmu’ Mons George Grima. Although all the plumbing is functioning, we are being asked €22,000 for the supply of electrical power.
On 10th February 2009, Mons. G.Grima and Mons. Abbott Berthold Heigl OSB concelebrated Mass and later Bishop Philip Anyolo joined them in the blessing of the new Laundry. Abbot Heigl was so impressed with all the good work towards these orphans and AIDS afflicted children that he offered to sponsor the Kindergarten, which will be started shortly.

The Missionary Movement has undertaken several other projects in Kenya, but obviously the most important is that of ‘The Divine Mercy’. In this photo, Bishop Anyolo is seen showing the plans to the congregation on Foundation Day. To-day this dream has been realised.

ST. JOSEPH'S COMPLEX is another important project, which was inaugurated on 4th October 2008 in the town of Bondo. Mons. G. One block will be for blind children, another for deaf and dumb and the third for Orpans with AIDS. Work has already started on the first two dormitories, the kitchen and the dining hall.
''ST.

NYAMONGE NEW HOME FOR ORPHANS: We are hoping that works would start by next October on a new Orphanage for young AIDS victims, in the areas around Nyamonge. This Project is sponsored by the Kilimanjaro Challange 4; and will be called “Oasis of Peace”. We have already drilled for water and have cleared the ground in preparation for construction.

HOMES FOR THE LEPERS IN AMBO
Many lepers families are living in a cemetery in the town of Ambo. They live there without any dignity, suffering from all basic necessities. The most vulnerable are the children They are hungry, don’t go to school, with no hygiene at all, and are also exposed to all kinds of disease. Fr. George Grima have been visiting these people and decided to join all efforts in the Missionary Movement to remove as much people as he can from that cemetery, and to take them to a better places. The first Marathon on Malta television was done and it was success. Many lepers have for the first time, a small home where, at least, they may live with dignity. There were families who were living in this cemetery for the last six years! The dream of the Missionary Movement is to give them a home, but also education, income generating programs, and above all water. The first photo below shows where these families used to live before our project, while in the other two you can see their new homes.

Pe.

Another country in which our Movement is working very hard in order to improve the terrible standard of living of certain groups of the population is Ethiopia. Even in this African state, the Movement is running several projects, of varied type and in varied localities. Demmi Dollo and Sakko are two such areas. Poverty and misery have no limit or control in these two areas. The main problems in these two cities and the villages next to them are leprosy and elephantiasis. We have two helping systems: prevention, and cure. Over 4000 cases are taken care of every year. However, we are not providing all the necessary cures, as we lack the means. Still, that little we offer is heartfelt. Houses are being built for the lepers, so that they do not keep on living in the cemeteries or places of great misery.

Mons. George Grima, together with a number of Maltese benefactors, opened the first school in the town of Karro, in Ethiopia. Thousands of people were present for the blessing of the school. On the peoples' faces one could see an expression that words cannot really express, they were truly grateful. This project has three main objectives. The first aim is to give the necessary nutrition to those children who come to us in a very poor state of health due to lack of food. The second aim is to provide basic health attention since the vast majority of the children who fall sick, are not provided with any proper health care. The third aim regards education, since we strongly believe that if provide education to these children, we will be giving them hope for their future. The teachers are trained and paid by the Missionary Movement.

In Geib and Choroftu, two villages in Ethiopia, the Missionary Movement managed to construct two projects in order to provide water to the population of these very poor villages. The construction of these two projects leads to much less suffering to the poor families of these two villages, especially since clean water means less health problems, therefore a much better life. Where there is no water, people, even very young children, must walk very long distances to fetch some water. In most cases, the people who go and fetch the water do not even afford a pair of shoes, hence the task becomes much more difficult. One must also keep in mind, that the way back to the village is even more difficult since they will have to carry the heavy containers filled with water. Thanks to the two projects mentioned above, the people of Geib and Choroftu now can drink a clean cup of water, without the fear that the water they are drinking is contaminated.

In the city of Jimma, hundreds of families used to live in a cemetery simply because they were lepers, but thanks to the Missionary Movement 'Jesus in Thy Neighbour', now they are living in a new village which was built for them. In this village, there is a supply of water, electricity and toilets. We also provided kitchen facilities, and in the near future, a Day Center for the Children is going to be also available. We also have in mind to provide a Grinding Mill.

In Ethiopia, the Movement managed to open several clinics where poor people who cannot go to a hospital, at least will be given some medical attention, even though sometimes this could be limited due to our limitations. In this photo we can see a soldier being carried to one of our clinics. This soldier is one of the many victims, unfortunately sometimes including even very young children, of the conflicts that occur in this country.

New projects are being carried out in the areas of the Gumuz tribe. In this area, we are constructing two Kindergartens for the children who had never attended school. The photo on the left is a historical one because it is showing the first encounter between children from the tribe of Gumuz with a white man, Mons. George Grima, Founder of the Missionary Movement 'Jesus in Thy Neighbour'.

We cannot remain passive lookers...
... Let us all become active contributors in the improvement of the standard of living of our brothers and sisters in who are living in very difficult circumstances.
