PROJECTS REALISED IN THE YEAR 2008

Brazil

A new place to serve food. On April 10th, Fr George Grima along with Fr Claudio Lopes, from the State of Piuai, inaugurated and blessed a new and a most important Project. Piuai State is one of the poorest in Brazil; and since there is great poverty in the Parish of San Joao da Serra, Fr Claudio had approached Fr George to help in opening up another Home in the outskirts of his Parish. Fr George accepted, and so today, we are offering daily food to more than a 100 children.

Education. In Barbacena, in the State of Minas Gerias, we had only been providing meals to the poor children from the area of Monte Mario, but now we have added on the Children’s Pastoral, and besides food we also educate, give private lessons as well as teaching them the Holy Doctrine.

Kenya

A new Orphanage in Nakuru. This orphanage, which was funded by the Maltese Movement FACES, has been handed over to us, and it is our responsibility to educate, feed and look after the health of the 23 present and future orphans. This was blessed this on Sunday, 27th September, 2008; and shortly, we also hope to start receiving orphaned babies. We have invited over Sisters from India: Helpers of Mary, who will be running the Orphanage. Shortly, a new wing for orphaned babies will be constructed.

These Sisters will also be running another Orphanage in St. Gregory out-station. Although we have already blessed this Project on October 10th; we still need to finish the wash-rooms as well as the kitchen. Hopefully we shall shortly finalise this Project as well.

Another Project by the Missionary Movement is being realised in the Diocese of Kisumu; an orphanage run by the Sisters of St Anne. The Foundation stone of St Joseph was laid by Fr George Grima on 4th October, 2008; in the presence of the Auxiliary Bishop for Kisumu. The foundations for the dormitories were ready in early December and construction will be resumed shortly. The Chapel will be dedicated to St. Joseph, the Convent and Refectory to the Holy Family, and the dormitories to Nazareth. Archbishop Zaccheus received Fr Grima, thanked him on behalf of the poor in Africa, and blessed all the Benefactors from Malta and Gozo.

A Laundry in the Devine Mercy Home in Homa Bay. Last August, we started on a new laundry for the Devine Mercy Home. This orphanage hosts more than 75 children all afflicted with AIDS, and it was felt that they can no longer stay without proper laundry facilities. Fr George Grima campaigned towards this project in Philadelphia, USA; from where a substantial sum was raised, the rest of the funds were raised from Malta and Gozo. During a meeting Fr George had with Bishop Philip Anyolo of Homa Bay, showered praise and deep gratitude towards our Missionary movement for the sterling service in his Diocese towards these poor sick children. This project was inaugurated by Mr. David Abel, from Elizabeth Town, Pennsylvania; on 10th February, 2009.

Ethiopia

On 17th September 2008, Fr George blessed and inaugurated this Home in the village of AKWAYA JOKYE, in the Diocese of Gambella. At present, more than a 100 children are receiving their education as well as proper meals. This is one of the most primitive villages in Ethiopia.

On 16th September, a new Centre for the poor children of Bitta Washi was inaugurated, where we have extended our services to younger children under the age of six. This project was blessed by the Diocese Prefect Theo Van Ruyen along with Fr Grima, under the auspices of the Gib Mission Africa of Gibraltar.

On 18th September 2008, Fr George Grima blessed and inaugurated a new Home in the village of Kenkalcha, called: Kidane Mehret Day Centre. This village is one of the most backwards, 90% of these children have never had any schooling, and some have to walk for two hours to go to school. Now we can provide education to these young children as well. We still need to install a kitchen and wash-room facilities.

In the town of AMBO, there were many families afflicted with Leprosy, and as outcasts were forced to live among the graves in Cemeteries.  Our Movement could not tolerate this situation, and Fr George campaigned heavily on the Maltese media for offers to start building suitable homes for these families, away from these miserable conditions. New homes are already being constructed, and some have already been handed over to some families, in the presence of Fr George and the Provincial Father of the Nazarene movement.

On 18th December, 2008; Mother Esther, Provincial of the Daughters of Charity, handed over a Grinding Mill in the village of Tulema, Jimma. This village is populated by victims of Leprosy. Shortly another Grinding Mill will be donated by Sr. Tsige Petrus to help further these poor villagers.
